5 secrets my family urged me NOT to share…

For a video profile, we encourage clients to present yourself authentically, NOT scripted…just be yourself, and have fun; perhaps reveal something your prospects wouldn’t guess about you, kind of like this self-confession…

So I guess I have to admit it — by most standards, I’m probably super geeky — and I don’t mean Super with an “S” across your t-shirt; more like Buddha with a headset.

But I’m here to say there’s much more to me than the word “Geek” implies. In most ways, I’m just your average red-blooded, all-American family guy…who happens to be so obsessed with technology and the glorious stream of nonstop information it provides that it’s giving me a bit of a complex. I’m starting to wonder, am I strange? Abnormal?
Surely not!

I just need an outlet to process all this geek-joy…

…I’ll blog about it!

That’s not a geeky response, is it?

I mean, a geek would have to share his concerns with everyone; a geek would want to break down his activities and conduct an analysis! I’ve thought long and hard about this one. I’ve examined it from every angle. I’ve asked friends, relatives, and even the general public at large.

And my findings reveal: I’m NOT that guy!

Okay, let’s be real: What red-blooded, American father, who watched “Iron Man” with their kid in 2008, wasn’t secretly, if not unabashedly, waving their Black Sabbath air guitar down the hallway and out the theater, humming…

IRON MAN 05.02.08

Na, Na, Na-Na-Na…Nayayaya-Na-Na-Na

…while the wife and kids pretended to be with the normal guy walking up ahead? Surely that’s about as universal as it gets, right?

Are there guys who have NOT done that?

So, if I’m going to be super authentic, I’d also have to admit the following:

1I listen to SEO podcasts and audio books at 2x. It’s so exciting! I love the way my pulse quickens with the anticipation of each juicy new tidbit of information.

2I once joined a Linkedin discussion group focused exclusively on APIs. I mean, COME ON! Can anyone really say they do NOT find these fascinating?

3One time I drove my family back from DC to Dallas in 1 day, listening to the entire book, “Wikinomics.” In my own defense, though, I want to point out that I only laughed at the really funny parts.

4I’ve seriously considered asking my wife to record everything she wants to talk about, –so that I can listen to it while I’m working out with my Bluetooth headset on. I mean, surely this is a win-win for both of us: She gets my undivided (if sweaty) attention, and I get to hit two birds with one stone, thereby increasing my ability to provide for my lovely family. What more could a wife really want?

5Occasionally, my geeky defects surprise me. Like this morning…I logged my blood pressure readings into my HeartWise iPad app at 6:00 a.m., revved my VW Passat in manual, jumped on the Dallas North Tollway South, gear-shifted into 6th, timed every light perfectly, turned into my parking space at Market Street Station, and ran up the 4 flights of stairs to my office, all while listening to the most popular SEO podcast on iTunes…seriously! Upstairs, I poured my own special concoction of Guayaki (the 5-hour EXTRA STRENGTH sugar free Grape version) mixed with Genesis Today ACAI Berry on ice (shaken, not stirred).

I unfolded the yoga mat in my office, clicked on the headset again, and (I kid you not) heard the following as if cued especially for me:

Grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind, grind… I can bend in sixty-eight ways… I have lived for 12,000 days

I’ve made my point: I am NO geek!

I’m just a red-blooded, all-American DAD… who happens to have a super high metabolism and who enjoys frenetic activity (like online video) while consuming every drop of information available, at breakneck speed.

I rest my geeky case!

So… how will YOU present yourself?
