Online video has a profile

A profile is important for every online video used for business today.

It is similar to defining your social media profile on a social network. You define who you are, and your background, and a summary of your professional accomplishments. You include contact information, a website URL, and links to other websites where additional information may be found. Your public profile is indexed by search engines and hopefully listed when prospects and customers are searching online for services or products you provide.

The same thing is important to define for each online video…

  • the video title should be treated like a headline to catch attention (using important keywords)
  • the video description is enhanced with a transcript (at least 300 characters is recommended)
  • the video’s author helps establish its relationship to other content, websites and topics
  • keywords used in the description and as tags when uploading to video sharing sites
  • all locations on the internet where the video is found (such as the author’s website or blog)
  • the video thumbnail image to be shown when listed in search results

These are extremely important data elements used to index video objects.

How you define video for search

When defined effectively, the data helps align your online video message with how people are searching.

Schema.org is a collaborative, community activity with a mission to create, maintain, and promote schemas for structured data on the Internet, on web pages, in email messages, and beyond. Sponsored by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex, their search engines benefit by adoption of universal standards for defining web objects such as VIDEO. It also means they will lean toward ranking pages with schema objects HIGHER than pages without such definitions.
